Fantasy Garden Mural Beautifying the Streets in Curaçao

Among the popular and scenic destinations in the Caribbean is Curaçao. This island’s capital city, Willemstad was classified as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1997 due to its cultural and historical significance. In Willemstad lays the Punda district, a popular tourist destination for all things Caribbean. When walking the cobblestone streets of Punda, one will encounter a colorful surprise around every corner. One of which is Esteban Ferrales’ Fantasy Garden Mural, commissioned in 2007 by a local building owner.

This three-dimensional mural takes up a lot of space as it spans almost 30 feet and towers almost 10 feet tall. The sunflowers, butterfly, and hummingbirds are made from polychrome cement, which projects outward and creates a three-dimensional effect.
This adds another layer of detail and depth to the piece that makes the viewer feel more connected to the mural. Ferrales’ color palette also creates a happy and harmonious tone as the yellows, blues, and greens complement one another.
Close-ups of the mural show the intense details that the polychrome cement creates. These details show the three-dimensionality of the pieces which makes the viewer feel they are more connected to the mural.

Ferrales’ goal was to create a work that beautified the narrow streets of the city center. He accomplished this goal by commemorating the natural landscape that is found throughout the city in his Fantasy Garden Mural.
